Lilian Jackson Braun, Author of The Cat Who Etc., novels dies at 97

If you’re not familiar with this author, she wrote what seemed like a billion books involving a couple of cats that help solve crimes.

Honestly, I didn’t realize she was still alive. Just as I was positive that Phyliss A Whitney had died many moons ago, when she only passed away within the last 10 years–but for some reason, I’m still suspicious that the books supposedly written by her in the last years may have had  some ghosties to help. But not so for Ms. Braun, who was reportedly writing The Cat Who Smelled Smoke, but died before finishing.

I bet my bottom dollar that someone at the publishing house will not only find an author to finish the book, but also one to carry on this highly successful series. In Ms. Braun’s honor of course.

No disrespect to Ms. Braun or her fans, but I detest mysteries  with animals that solve crimes, find clues, and goodness help me, talk, while doing so. At least her felines only meowed their theories of the crime. Another series by Rita Mae Brown, the animals chat away happily discussing mayhem, or so I’ve been informed, I’ve not cracked the spine on any of them.

I’ve read a couple of mysteries with ferrets, and unfortunately, they aren’t immune to discovering the final link in a murder either, sigh. But no language skills!

Anyhoo, I commiserate with fans in the respect that whenever a favorite author passes, a void is left for the reader.

Conversation I overheard many years ago:

    “I heard Charlie Parker died.”

“Bill will be upset – he collects his records – a big fan!”

“Yeah, but now he can complete his collection.”

    Silver linings, eh?
