Ive always wondered what the attraction is to a bookplate. Now if its from a famous persons own library collection then I can understand it but Ive never seen any that I considered collectible ephimera.
To me, as a book collector and dealer, I see bookplates as a devaluing factor in a collectible book.
Other than famous people personal collections, could you please expand on why these are collectible?

Im curious

Thanks,
Kyle

Dear Kyle,
I am at a loss to answer your question .Perhaps the best I can offer is that the the hobby is what I enjoy doing.

I used to collect hockey cards and love them. Have just about everything from 1966 - 1992. I show my wife an amazing Mark Messier rookie card and she may as well be looking at a chipped dinner plate. Hard to explain why any of us take a liking to collecting (or dealing in) certain things. I'm sure there are many that would even have a hard time understanding how a book could have any value once it has been read. Some of the artwork and designs on book plates can be pretty cool and I suppose, like numbered prints, there are both interesting items and a certain rarity of works by wanted designers. How's that for a guess?

Hey Lew - I haven't forgotten that bookplate I promised you but the letterpress cut and samples I've printed are buried someplace around here. - I'll have to clean up the desk before Christmas so I should come across them before then. -

Scheesh! This desk is getting so crowded I have barely enough room to move my mouse...

P.S. Thanks for the one you sent to me. Pretty cool!
