I'm kind of a classic link-building, SEO gal and tend to ignore social media or do very little with it (I'm afraid of it becoming a huge time sink more than anything), but I keep meaning to pay more attention.

Thanks for the thorough Twitter post. I'll have to print this out and spend some time going through it in more depth. :)

I joined twitter when it became obvious that it is here to stay and that if I did not sign up some unscrupulous person might take my internet name, prying1, and abuse it. I do hang around some social websites that have been known to attract trolls. Some of them are just meanspirited.

I would suggest that booksellers get on board asap to at least reserve their branded name.

That said I still don't quite get it and only occasionally use it. Usually when someone reminds me of it. (Like you have done so here.)

Sorry Bruce for suggesting this since it will mean more work and take you away from your reading time. Perhaps The Bookshop Blog could have a little spot for us to put our Twitter names so we can link to one another. They would not necessarily have to link to our accounts. Just be available for us to see who is who in the ever loving book world.

When you started out by saying that Twitter was a "bastard child" I wasn't quite sure where you were going with this post, but you really brought it around. I have been a Twitter member for a year now and it sounds as though you have a pretty good grasp of how it all works.

I didn't understand entirely how the hashtags worked. I understood that using the "#" tag would put your post into a group, but I didn't realize that you had to follow @hashtags, to get them indexed.

I find Twitter is fun to use as you can do that while doing other things like pricing. While you wait for the engine to pull up prices you can run Twitter in background. So that little 30 second snippet of time while you way for AddAll to spit out a search, you can do quick scan of Twitter for any relevant chatter.

Great post about Twitter. I had mentioned it on one of the booksellers forums a while back and most of the comments I received was "it is a waste of time". But I joined anyway and I really enjoy it. I tweet about my book business, about my craft blog and I have met others tweeters from Saskatchewan and tweeters from the US and Overseas.

I find myself to a bit behind of time. I've heard about twitter quite some time ago, but I never felt about it to be something that important and necessary for promotion. About a short consideration I decided to give it a try and see for myself if all the benefits people talk about are true.
