As new talents emerge and share their literary gifts with us, other magnificent, sometimes legendary writers are taken away. Every year is a balancing act. As Khaled Hosseini and Hisham Matar come to the forefront, Norman Mailer and Kurt Vonnegut depart.

The Bookchase Blog has compiled a tidy list of some notables that have penned their last words.

September:
Madeleine L’Engle, 88 – author most famous for “A Wrinkle in Time”
Robert Jordan, 58 – fantasy author

October:
Peg Bracken, 89 – author of the “I Hate to Cook Book”

November:
Norman Mailer, 84 – author and celebrity
Ira Levin, 78 – author most famous for “Rosemary’s Baby”
